Talk Time...
Hallelujah! I was going to write 'Touch Wood' but could imagine dad tapping on my head saying 'Maramandai' literally translated to 'Wood head'! he he he. Dad and I were getting tired of hearing, "Does she say any words? Yet!?" and were worried that she was never going to speak. Babies, or rather toddlers, her age are uttering understandable words, not unrecognisable mumbles! I always comforted myself with this joke, I once read.
A little boy, about 5yrs old, wouldn't speak. Try as much as they could, his parents couldn't get him to say a word. They spent huge amounts of money on psychologists and speech therapists, but the boy wouldn't do as much as open his mouth. Then, one day at dinner, he said, "There's no salt in the food!". His parents jumped with joy! "He spoke, he spoke", they cried and then asked him, "What took you so long to speak?" He replied, "Well, everything has been perfect, till now!"
Well, I guess, everything has been perfect for her, till now! Nah! Can imagine the little one vigourously shaking her head for an emphatic no!! Ok, ok... Getting to the point of what she said today. Here goes...
This morning, I was helping her put her shoes on, when I asked her, "Where's your other shoe?". She replied, "Atho" (meaning "there" in my native tongue, for those of you who don't understand!) pointing her stubby little finger at the missing shoe. A little later, dad ordered her, "Go get your coat!" and she says, "Oh! yes!". We were stunned! Wow, my baby's responding. We always, spoke to the little one like one would to a puppy, minus the rollover and play dead! - Go there, sit, stand, close the door and ofcourse, the ubiquitous 'No!'. She would do what we 'command' but it never evoked a response from her, until... today! And now, she's sitting on my lap trying to switch off the computer, just as I am screaming, "Nooooooooooo......". Bling!
